Summer Safety for Dogs - Christmas Edition (Melbourne Heat)

A Melbourne Christmas often means BBQs, backyard hangs, and temperatures that jump from pleasant to scorching in minutes. Dogs feel the heat far more intensely than we do, and heat-related emergencies are unfortunately common this time of year.

Here’s your essential guide to keeping your dog cool, safe, and comfortable during the hottest weeks of the festive season.

Why Dogs Struggle More in Heat

Dogs can’t sweat like humans. They rely mostly on panting, which is less effective in humid or extreme heat. Flat-faced breeds (Frenchies, Pugs, Cavoodles, Boxers), senior dogs, puppies, and overweight dogs are at the highest risk.

Walk Early or Skip the Walk

Melbourne pavements heat up quickly and can burn paws within seconds.

✔️ Safe walking tips:

  • Walk before 9am or after sunset
  • Choose grass, dirt trails or shaded paths
  • Test the ground with your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them

If it's a 30°C+ day, it’s often safer to skip the walk and stick to enrichment instead.

Keep Dogs Indoors During Peak Heat

Between 11am–6pm, temperatures peak.

✔️ Keep them cool by:

  • Using fans or air-conditioning
  • Closing blinds to block harsh afternoon sun
  • Providing cooling mats or damp towels
  • Making frozen enrichment (broth cubes, stuffed Kongs, yoghurt drops)

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

In summer, dogs need more water than usual.

✔️ Hydration tips:

  • Have 2-3 water bowls available
  • Add ice blocks to slow warm-up
  • Offer dog-safe electrolytes if they’ve been active
  • Bring portable water on outings

Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a veterinary emergency.

Symptoms include:

  • heavy panting
  • bright red gums
  • vomiting or drooling
  • wobbling or collapse
  • rapid heartbeat
  • confusion

👉 If you see these signs, go to your nearest emergency vet immediately.

Festive Frozen Treat Ideas

Cool your dog down with:

  • frozen watermelon cubes
  • frozen bone broth
  • a Christmas-themed frozen lick mat
  • blended strawberry + yoghurt pupsicles
  • frozen raw meal patties for slow melt-and-lick fun

Heat safety isn’t about limiting fun - it’s about making Christmas safer and more enjoyable for your dog. With the right preparation, your pup can enjoy a relaxed, cool and paw-fect holiday season.
